IAS Visiting Fellow Assistant Professor Justin C. Major delivers a seminar on their research - 

The culture of engineering is often described as “a culture of shared crying” given the demanding nature of its programs characterized by long hours, heavy workloads, competition, and a celebration of poor mental health. Yet, many of us carry things we do not talk about: experiences, memories, and traumas that guide our everyday thinking and action. What happens when the feelings tied to what we once survived and overcome meet an environment that, for many students, requires the same dire survival? In this interactive presentation, we will explore the stories of US engineering students in similar situations. We will not just concentrate on what happened to them and how it affected their engineering experiences, but also on how they cope and persist, especially when someone is there with outstretched arms. This presentation will challenge participants’ individual and collective thinking and ask them to imagine more trauma-informed engineering education.

Arrivals from 11:45 am for a 12:00 noon start. For those joining in-person, lunch will be served after the seminar from 1:00pm.
